Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days - June 1 & 2, 2013

Maddie's Pet Adoption Days
If you’ve been thinking it’s time to adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue group, you’ll want to know about a sweet offer that’s meant to seal the deal: No adoption fee. At least, no adoption fee for you.

Maddie’s Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping more homeless pets find their forever homes, will pay the adoption fee at more than 200 adoption locations in five states on June 1 and 2. The event is called Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days, and this is the first time they’ve taken the offer outside of their own San Francisco Bay Area backyard.

You see, Maddie’s wanted to make sure what they had a hunch about was true: That paying an adoption fee (or not) has no bearing on how much a family values the pets they bring into the home. The idea that “paying” for a pet reduces the chance of the animal being homeless again has long been “common knowledge” in the shelter and rescue community. The logic seemed sound: If you couldn’t afford an adoption fee, you probably couldn’t afford a pet.

The logic may have been sound, but the facts prove otherwise.

After the first three pet adoption events during which Maddie’s covered the adoption fees, the Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine followed up with adopters. What they found confirmed the hunch of the Maddie’s Fund team: The overwhelming majority of the dogs and cats who’d been adopted with Maddie’s picking up the fee were still in their homes. Even better, their owners loved them, and spoiled them rotten just like any other pets.

In the first three years of the event, Maddie’s Fund helped get 6,722 pets adopted in the San Francisco Bay Area. This year, they’re trying for 5,000 pets adopted, and have set aside $4 million to help make it happen. There’s a whole lot of “win” in that plan, don’t you think?

Ready to adopt? Here are the communities on board for this year’s event:

  • New York City
  • Washoe County, NV (Reno)
  • Dane County, WI (Madison)
  • Alachua County, FL (Gainesville)
  • Santa Clara County, CA (San Jose)
  • Alameda County, CA (Oakland, Berkeley)
  • Contra Costa County, CA (Concord)
  • San Francisco City and County, CA
