Important Facts about Trupanion That Could Affect Your Pet's Coverage

When looking at Trupanion's pet insurance coverage, it's important to remember that they don't cover exam fees, which can be a significant expense if your pet needs a specialist or has a condition that requires frequent trips to the vet. In addition, Trupanion has a per-incident deductible which will need to be met each time you visit the vet for a new condition. Finally, Trupanion doesn't offer a routine care plan, so you'll have to cover those expenses on your own.

12 Reasons to Consider Embrace over Trupanion Pet Insurance

1. Optional Routine Care Plans

Trupanion does not offer routine care coverage. Embrace promotes, rewards, and encourages healthy pets by offering Wellness Rewards, an optional non-insurance product that reimburses for everyday veterinary, grooming, and training costs.

Without the option of a wellness plan there are gaps in Trupanion’s policy. With Embrace there’s no doubt that you have total protection in sickness AND in health.

2. Coverage for Exam Fees

Trupanion does not include the exam fee in their reimbursement. Visiting an emergency hospital, or even going to a scheduled visit at your primary veterinary or a veterinary specialist, can include an expensive exam fee – sometimes well over $100. Not having coverage for these fees is like having to pay an extra deductible at every visit. Embrace believes that this fee should be covered.

3. No Extra Cost for Alternative Care

Trupanion doesn’t cover alternative treatments like acupuncture or chiropractic care in their policy. If you want coverage for these treatments, you’ll have to add their “Recovery and Complementary Care” rider at an additional cost. Embrace includes alternative therapy on every policy at no extra cost.

4. Shorter Illness Waiting Periods

Trupanion has a 30-day waiting period for all illnesses. Embrace only has a 14-day waiting period for illnesses to get you covered sooner.

5. One Annual Deductible

Embrace uses an annual deductible, while Trupanion uses a per-condition deductible. An annual deductible only needs to be met once per year, regardless of how many claims you make. Plans with a per-condition deductible require you to pay a new deductible every time you go the vet for a new condition. If your pet has an unlucky year, your out-of-pocket costs could be higher by a few hundred dollars with a per-condition deductible.

6. More Coverage Options Available

Trupanion does not allow you to personalize your annual maximum or the percentage of reimbursement that you get. Embrace allows you to pick your annual deductible, annual maximum, and percentage of reimbursement.

Trupanion’s policy is a set reimbursement that leaves you little wiggle room. With their high reimbursement percentage, your premium is likely to be much higher. All pet insurance premiums increase over time for one reason or another, and with Embrace’s policy you can make small changes in your coverage to fit your budget.

7. Simpler Medical Records Requirement

Trupanion requires 18 months of your pet’s records to process claims. Embrace only needs the last 12 months of records or, for new pets, records back to the first visit you’ve had with them.

Trupanion also does not offer any review of your pet’s medical records when you enroll, leaving it to be done when you file your first claim. Embrace offers you an optional Medical History Review. If your pet has any pre-existing conditions, this review will let you know how they could affect your coverage moving forward.

8. Premium Set for 12 Months

Trupanion’s policy renews each month and that could mean a premium increase at any time. Embrace policies are 12 months long so your premium is set for the year unless you change addresses or adjust your policy.

This also means that Trupanion doesn’t allow you to pay your premium annually. With Embrace, you can pay your entire policy premium for the year or by month.

9. More Reimbursement for Prescription Diets

Trupanion offers only 50% back on prescription diet foods under their main policy and this reimbursement is subject to deductible and co-pay. Plus, they’ll only cover it for two months. Embrace reimburses prescription diet foods with Wellness Rewards 100% up to your selected annual allowance with no time restrictions.

10. Diminishing Deductible Feature

Embrace is the only pet insurer to offer a diminishing deductible. With Embrace’s Healthy Pet Deductible, your pet's annual deductible automatically goes down by $50 each year you don't receive a claim reimbursement. This is included with every policy at no extra charge.

11. More Time to Submit Claims

Trupanion requires you to submit claims within 90 days of the office visit. Embrace gives you your entire policy term, plus 60 days after it renews to submit your claims.

12. Higher Age Limits at Enrollment

Trupanion’s cutoff age for enrolling pets is 14 years old. At Embrace, your pets are eligible for accident and illness coverage up to their 15th birthday and after 15 years of age they are eligible for an accident-only policy. Wellness Rewards is available with all policies.
