Scottish Deerhound Rawley had always been healthy, but all that changed when he was 2 years old. He developed pneumonia, and after treatment, it just kept coming back. He was admitted to Michigan State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for treatment as well as a battery of tests and specialty consults.

His veterinarians initially diagnosed him with a neurological swallowing disorder that caused him to aspirate his food and water, resulting in repeated bouts of aspiration pneumonia.

Later, as he continued to struggle with respiratory infections despite careful management, tests suggested an immune system component to the problem. A course of inhaled steroids was prescribed. The cost of the medication alone would be over $300 a month -- potentially for life.
