Mixed Breed Dog Tore Both Cruciate Ligaments

Kim W. rescued a mixed breed pup, Lily, and debated how valuable insurance would be for her. After serious consideration of canceling the policy when she found out that Lily had some pre-existing conditions, Kim and her husband decided to give it one more chance – and they were so thankful that they did. Kim shared her experience with Embrace.

“I got my dog, Lily, from a rescue site. She was a puppy born into their care. She was classified as a ‘mega mutt’ when they did the DNA test on her. With mutts, you’d usually think they would be super healthy and have no or few issues. Lily was just over a year old when I learned about pet insurance. I did research, and Embrace came up as one of the top five insurance companies people recommended. After further investigation I found it to be the most affordable for me, plus with a 30-day money-back guarantee I thought I’d try and see if I feel the need to keep it.

During the waiting period, Lily had a vet appointment. I had our vet complete the Orthopedic Report Card while I was there. When I got the report back stating what wouldn’t be covered, I was little upset. At that point I debated cancelling the insurance, but after discussing it with my husband we decided to keep it for a few months and see if we felt it was worth it.

About two months or so after purchasing Embrace, I noticed Lily limping. We took her to North Plains Vet Clinic and at that time it appeared to be a muscle strain. We followed the vet’s instructions for a couple of weeks, then suddenly Lily would not put any weight on her back leg. When we went back to the vet, it was determined that she tore her CCL (Cranial Cruciate Ligament).

Dr. Tsui recommended a surgeon for Lily to go see and I set up an appointment for Lily to go see them that day. Two days before her appointment, Lily would not get up and walk at all. Neither of her back legs were functioning and she was in a lot of pain. I took her to the surgeon the next morning. It was found that she tore the CCL in her other leg as well, so they took her into surgery that morning. The bill for that surgery was over $8,000 – and she still needed physical therapy afterwards for many weeks.

If I had cancelled the insurance, I would not have been able to afford to fix her. I would have had to return her to the rescue group I got her from. I am so thankful that I had Embrace. I only had to pay my $200 annual deductible and 20% of the expenses after that. Instead of paying over $8,000, I paid less than $2,000 for her surgery.

After a few months of recovery, Lily needed to go to physical therapy to get her range of motion back in her legs. She had to go to therapy 2-3 days a week. Instead of paying $150-200 a week, I was only responsible for 20% of that bill because Embrace covers physical therapy as well.

Lily made a full recovery and was doing amazingly, but after a few months she started limping again. I took her back to the vet and it turned out she was healed but had lingering pain. I decided that instead of keeping her on pain meds for the rest of her life we’d find a chiropractor who treated dogs. I couldn’t believe it when I found out Embrace would cover that too.

Lily has been going to a chiropractor about every three weeks and the treatment has been great. She doesn’t limp nearly as often, only when she over exerts herself. If it weren’t for Embrace Pet Insurance, I would never be able to afford any of these services for Lily. Now she is able to live a long, happy, and healthy life with me. Lily is my baby and best friend – I don’t know what I would do without her. Because of my experience and how close it came for me to losing her had I not become part of the Embrace family, I am a true advocate of Embrace. I recommend Embrace to everyone I know, and even strangers in stores. All of my animals are insured with Embrace now and forever in the future.”
