Wellness Gone Wild

Back in the day, old school Embracer philosophy was that insurance was for “unexpected things,” the big stuff. Broken legs, swallowed tennis balls, cancer, diabetes, and so on... But, after a few years, we started noticing a trend. Pet parents wanted to “use” their insurance, for little stuff - shots, flea and tick meds, even dental cleanings. More like their own human insurance, they wanted to go to the doctor for a yearly checkup and feel that their insurance was paying off. So, we started the Wellness Rewards program, just to cover routine wellness care at 100% up to your yearly limit.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when I had Kayden (right) at his yearly checkup and got an estimate for his flea and tick meds, heartworm test and pills, and so on and, wanting a little help with this bill, I’m kicking my old-school Embracer self for not adding Wellness Rewards.  So, I checked into the program and was floored by how much wellness has grown in the past few years.  We’ve listened to our pet parents and seen trends in what items you submitted for coverage, and found a laundry list of new items to cover under our wellness rider. And no, this is not a delayed April fools joke. We now  cover:

  • Supplements (including glucosamine, Chondroitin, anxiety supplements, etc.)
  • Homeopathic medications
  • Vitamins
  • County dog tags
  • Cremation and burial
  • Collars, leashes, and harnesses (except for shock-type collars)
  • GPS trackers and activity monitors
  • Thundershirts (Already covered under our accident and illness plan if prescribed by a vet)
  • Training classes & behavioral consultations
  • Wellness massage
  • Dental treats and chews
  • Nail covers, soft claws, and nail trimming supplies
  • Shampoo and conditioners, including cleansing wipes
  • Ear cleaners
  • Eye moisturizing drops
  • Medical marijuana dispensed by vets or pharmacies

All this is in addition to the stuff already covered by Wellness Rewards, like shots, titers, spaying and neutering, routine blood work, fecal testing, microchipping, nail trimming, and a few more.

So, if you can’t tell, I’m doing the mental math on whether I should add Wellness Rewards to my plan mid-term. And the easy answer is YES! Holy cow, an unabashed YES! Now, the question is what to spend it on. Boosters and preventative meds? Go for our next level of training classes? Or do I take him on a little shopping spree for a new collar and harness?

Wait, I don’t have to choose practical over indulgent. Because the rider covers up to $650 per year, which is more than I could spend even on a retail therapy spree. And at renewal I can use next year’s allowance on a dental cleaning and his shots. He might need to make his new collar last more than one year? Darn...
