Cooler Heads Prevail With Our Adorable PSAs

By Lea Jaratz

It’s that time of year - when the summer heat PSAs start circulating, and we’re no different. It never hurts to remind yourself and others what can happen while you’re out having fun in the sun. Hopefully, together we can prevent some injuries, or even a tragedy.

Let’s refresh, with adorable visuals, shall we?

Pets in Hot Cars

Never leave your pet in the car on a warm day. Not even with the windows down. Not even in the shade. The risk of brain damage or death can happen in as little as 15 minutes.

If you do see a pet in a locked car, please don’t break them out yourself. The safest thing to do is to try to find the owner in the stores nearby, or call 911 for a professional extrication. The chance of you or the animal getting hurt by glass or the animal running off in fear because someone is breaking into their car is a real concern.

Hot, Hot, Hot

But heat stroke isn’t limited to animals in vehicles. Animals don’t sweat like humans. And as the temperature outside reaches the pet’s body temperature, (around 100 degrees Fahrenheit) panting is ineffective. The best thing you can do is provide them with shade and water. Wading pools or a wet towel to lie on can help too.

Protecting Paw Pads

It’s best to keep your outdoor activities to early morning or after dusk to avoid the heat of the day. This can also help protect your pet’s paw pads from injury on hot surfaces (namely asphalt, concrete, sand and metal). If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for their cute toes.

If you need to be out in the midday sun, consider foot protection or stay in the grass. Your pet may also need sunscreen to avoid burns.

We’ve broken down our summer infographic, so feel free to share these quick and cute PSAs with your social media friends. It’s entirely possible that even your most pet-loving friends weren’t aware of some of these dangers.
