2018 Gift-Giving Guide for Pet Lovers

By Sarah Sypniewski

Here we are again – the holidays are upon us! This year, I am determined to do much better than I have in years past with gifts. I usually wait until the last minute, and then I’m scrambling to get things ordered and delivered on time. This year, I’m ahead of the game and have most of the human children in my life taken care of, but I still need to get something awesome for my doggos. Since I’m poking around online anyway, I’ve put together a little guide for you to find cool stuff for your pets, other people’s pets, and the people in your life who love pets. No need to thank me; just send me some holiday cookies and we’ll call it even.

cutting board
For the Foodies

A cutting board customized with the words “You Gonna Eat That” and your pet’s image from Top Notch Custom Design is a great gift for people who love food and entertaining as much as their pets. The boards are high quality and handmade in Texas. Turn around time is a couple of weeks, so you still have time to score one of these. Starting at $75.

For the Gadget Gurus

Petnet SmartFeeder just hit the market, and it’s got a lot to offer. It’s an automatic cat and dog feeder that connects to an app that enables you to set the time and portion for meals. Not sure how much you should actually be feeding your fluff head? No problem. Petnet can help you determine that after you enter in a few details about your pet. You can even pour the food manually and it will guide you with measuring lights to tell you how much to feed. And it’s not just useful for the times you aren’t home. You can use voice command by asking Alexa to feed your bestie from across the room. You can also hook it up to interface with Nest cameras and Google Home. $179

EYENIMAL® Petcam lets you in on what you’ve always wanted to know: what the heck your cat does out there in the world! There are versions for dogs too. These small, motion-detection cameras shoot anytime your pet is in motion so you can see what’s happening. It's even got night vision. Let the stalking begin! Starting at $99.

Litter-Robot III Open Air is the answer to your poo-rayers! This self-cleaning litter box hooks up to your phone via app. You can program it to automatically detect when your kitty has done their biz and trigger the sift and separate function, or you can set alerts to tell you when to do it manually. There’s also a nightlight and a backup battery that kicks in if the power goes off. Works with multiple cats too. $449

Mini Felt Pets
For the Sentimentalists

MiniSoulmates makes absolute magic with felt. She creates little needle felt animals that are extremely lifelike. She’s based in Greece, so if you’re in the US, the lead time for an order can be up to a month. She also keeps an inventory of ready-made animals for sale at anytime. Starting at $150.

The Wildersmith makes tiny customized hand-sculpted versions of your favorite pet or animal. These tiny totems make excellent memorial gifts or just fun, pocket-sized whimsy to bestow upon your fave animal lover. She also keeps a stock of non-customized animal totems and jewelry in her shop, and because they are all handmade, every piece is one-of-a-kind. If you want a custom piece, plan ahead. She sells custom order slots every two weeks during a specific window. Customized pieces start at $60, non-customized inventory starts at $15.

For Those Who Like Nice Things in Their Home

Fernish is a new rental/subscription service that provides you with furniture. Yes, you read that right. The best part is that they are pet-friendly. The service is currently only available in Los Angeles and Seattle, but it’s a brand-new company, and it just partnered with CB2, so it’s expanding all the time. Bye, bye, fur-covered couch! Hello, new look every month! Cost varies depending on the furniture you select, but the delivery fee is waived for subscriptions over $99.

Dog Spirit Glassware is for the dog lover who is also a whiskey lover. These etched bar glasses come in a set of four. You can choose from a list of 20 dog breeds, and the design includes a graphic of the dog doing something different on each glass, along with a characteristic of the breed and the breed name. $60

If you’re looking for something a little less serious, you might want to check out the “Bad Dog” collection instead.

Cat Scratch Bookends are purrfect for anyone who loves cats and books – which is like, so many of us! These are handmade in Kentucky from carbon steel. The artist also designs bookends featuring other animals. $65

For the Adventurers

Halo Dog and Halo Cat are LED collars that come in four colors so your adventure-seeking pet can be seen in the dark up to a block away. They are lightweight, durable, and won’t slip off. All collars are 28” but can be cut down to the size you need. They are fully rechargeable and each collar comes with a USB charger. $15

For the True Holiday Fans

Um, did you know that Target has a whole section of family pajamas that INCLUDE PET PAJAMAS? I mean, what else is there to say? Prices start at $9.

For the Non-canine/Feline Crew

Ubbys N Stuff has an entire shop dedicated to fun custom-made (or not) blankets, outfits, and gifts for reptiles, birds, and all the non-dog/cat people in your life. I really can’t choose just one item. I suggest you go there when you have some time and cash to spare for your favorite feathered or scaled friend. Prices start at $10.
