Orlando's Water & Weather: Your Pet's Safety Net
Orlando isn't on the coast, but water is everywhere, and so are storms. With over 100 lakes within city limits and a location squarely in hurricane territory, Orlando pets face year-round risks that pet parents don't always anticipate.
Freshwater Dangers Are Real
Orlando's lakes look peaceful, but they hide serious threats. Alligators inhabit virtually every lake, pond, and waterway in Central Florida, even small retention ponds in suburban neighborhoods. Blue-green algae blooms appear in warm months and can be fatal to dogs within hours of exposure. Bacteria thrive in stagnant water, especially after heavy rains. Unlike gated beach access, Orlando's lakes are woven into daily life. Dog parks border them, trails circle them, backyards open onto them.
Inland Doesn't Mean Safe from Storms
Orlando sits about 50 miles inland, but hurricanes remain dangerous well into Central Florida. Charley (2004), Irma (2017), and Ian (2022) all proved Orlando is very much in the danger zone. Sustained winds, widespread flooding, tornadoes spawned by storm bands, and power outages lasting days leave pets vulnerable to heat and debris hazards.
