Does pet insurance cover prescriptions?

Yes, Embrace’s prescription drug coverage for take-home medications is available with every policy. This coverage reimburses for FDA-approved and Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia-included drugs prescribed for covered conditions.

What does it cover?

It covers take-home drugs such as antibiotics, allergy meds, insulin & supplies, and eye & ear drops. Drugs will be prescribed with a vet visit about 80% of the time, costing $15 to $200 on average. We've seen prescription drug claims as high as $900.

Our Rx drug coverage applies toward prescription medications for treating covered accidents and illnesses. It does not include coverage for heartworm/flea/tick preventatives or prescription diet food. We help you budget for those items with our Wellness Rewards.

Claim examples with pet prescription costs from our policyholders:

  • Allergy meds for Maximus, a young English Bulldog: $798.71 for Rx drugs
  • Vomiting & pneumonia in an English Bulldog: $562.40 for Rx drugs

Is there a deductible and co-pay?

Yes, your prescription medication costs count toward your annual deductible, allowing you to reach your deductible sooner, and will require a co-pay.

Is prescription drug coverage included on every policy?

That depends on your state of residence. In some states prescription drug coverage is an optional add-on while in others it is included on all new policies.

Does pet insurance cover prescription food?

Prescription diet food purchased from your vet is reimbursable through Embrace Pet Insurance's Wellness Rewards plan. While prescription food is not covered by the prescription drug portion of the accident and illness insurance, reimbursement through Wellness Rewards is at 100% up to your annual limit.

Does pet insurance cover flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives?

Preventative medications prescribed by your vet are reimbursable through Embrace Pet Insurance's Wellness Rewards plan at 100% up to your annual limit. They are not covered by insurance.
