Hot sand burns (sand can reach 140°F+)

HEAT & DESERT RISKS

Paw pad burns from pavement

Dehydration happens faster than you think

Valley Fever from desert dust (fungal infection)

COYOTE ENCOUNTERS

Active day and night in canyon neighborhoods

Small dogs at highest risk (under 25 lbs)

Hunt in pairs or packs, especially during pup season

FOXTAIL HAZARDS

Grass seed penetration into paws and between toes

Ear canal migration causing infections and hearing damage

Nasal cavity embedding leading to sneezing and bleeding

San Diego Dog Parks & Beaches

Living the San Diego dog life means year-round beach days and trail adventures, but pet insurance in San Diego is essential when those adventures go wrong. Here's what you need to know about the popular spots:

DEL MAR DOG BEACH

Dogs allowed on-leash during certain hours (varies by season - check Del Mar's current rules). Beautiful wide beach for walking and the adjacent rivermouth area offers calm water for swimming. Less chaotic than OB Dog Beach but still social. Parking meters and time limits apply.

FIESTA ISLAND

Over 90 acres of open space for serious runners and fetch fanatics. While not scenic (it's mostly dirt and sand), it's perfect for dogs who need room to really stretch their legs. Bring your own water and shade since there's none here. Foxtails are a major hazard April through November, so check paws and ears thoroughly after visits.

CORONADO DOG BEACH

North end of Coronado Beach offers off-leash freedom with typically calmer crowds than OB Dog Beach. The sand is cleaner and the waves gentler, making it great for swimming dogs. No bridge toll (since 2002) but parking can be limited. Many consider it worth the trip for the prettier, more controlled environment.

DOG BEACH (Ocean Beach)

The original off-leash beach at the north end of OB, open 24/7 for sandy adventures. This popular spot attracts hundreds of dogs on weekends, so come early for parking and a calmer experience. Watch for fishhooks in the sand and keep dogs away from the dead marine life they love to investigate. Peak times can get chaotic with so many excited pups, perfect socialization for confident dogs, may be overwhelming for shy ones.

BALBOA PARK

Open, unfenced off-leash field popular with locals. No separate small/large sections here, so all dogs mix together. Gets dusty during dry months but offers lots of space to run. The surrounding canyon trails are beautiful for leashed walks but stay alert for rattlesnakes, especially in warmer months. Busy but generally well-managed crowd.

San Diego's Year-Round Pet Hazards

While San Diego's beautiful weather encourages outdoor adventures, it also means your pet encounters unique hazards 365 days a year:

SPRING

Rattlesnakes emerge

Foxtail season starts

Flea explosion

Pollen allergies

SUMMER

Peak tourist/beach season

Extreme heat inland

Stingray breeding season

July 4th panic

FALL

Fire season

Santa Ana winds

Continued rattlesnakes

Halloween chocolate

WINTER

"June Gloom" depression

King tides

Seasonal allergies

Mushrooms after rain

CONSTANT RISKS

San Diego pet insurance provides coverage for ongoing and seasonal hazards your dog encounters, with accidents and illnesses included in these policies after waiting periods conclude.

Coyotes are everywhere and increasingly bold

San Diego has one of the highest urban coyote populations in the US. They're in every neighborhood with canyons or open space, hunting day and night. Small dogs (under 25 lbs) are at highest risk, but they've taken dogs up to 45 lbs.

Hot pavement burns paw pads

If you can't hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it's too hot for paws. Black asphalt can reach 140°F when air temp is only 85°F. Morning walks before 9am or evening after 7pm are safest. Booties help but many dogs hate them.

Fleas and ticks thrive year-round

San Diego's mild climate means no winter die-off. Even indoor pets need year-round prevention. One flea can lay 50 eggs daily, and ticks carry serious diseases. Monthly prevention costs less than treating an infestation or tick-borne illness. Check for ticks after every hike, especially around ears and paws.

Can I use any vet in San Diego?

Open

Open

How fast are Embrace claims paid?

Open

We process most claims within 10-15 business days once we have your records, with direct deposit arriving just days after approval. While first claims may need a bit more time for medical record review, our streamlined process gets you reimbursed quickly when you need it most.

How do waiting periods work for California pet insurance?

Open

A waiting period in pet insurance is a short period at the start of the policy when coverage for certain conditions or treatments is not yet active. Waiting periods help prevent fraud and vary depending on the type of coverage and the laws in your specific state. Once the waiting period ends, your coverage for those previously restricted conditions kicks in, and your beloved pet can enjoy the full benefits of the policy. These waiting periods or exclusion periods, can vary. Click here to get the details.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Open

Pre-existing conditions are usually excluded across the industry. However, Embrace Pet Insurance may cover certain curable conditions once a pet has been symptom-free and treatment-free for 12 months. Ongoing or chronic problems diagnosed before enrollment stay excluded, which is why enrolling pets early is the best approach.

Does San Diego pet insurance cover Mexican vet visits?

Open

Yes! Embrace can cover licensed veterinary care abroad for travelers (often up to 6 months), perfect for Baja adventures. Simply save itemized invoices—English translations and USD conversions speed up your claims. Always review your current policy for complete international coverage details.

What about beach injuries like stingray stings?

Open

Fully covered! Stingray injuries, fishhook emergencies, saltwater toxicity, and all those beach mishaps are protected as accidents after waiting periods.

Are foxtails covered?

Open

Yes! Foxtail removals are covered as accidents/foreign bodies when medically necessary. Whether it's a simple extraction or requires surgery, your coverage protects you from costs that can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

Do you cover Valley Fever in San Diego?

Open

Yes! Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis) from desert dust is covered as an illness when not pre-existing. With cases rising in California's inland regions and treatment requiring lengthy antifungal courses, having coverage provides crucial financial protection.

Is heat stroke covered?

Open

Yes! Heat stroke is covered as an accident—essential protection in San Diego where even 80° days with humidity can turn dangerous. While prevention is your best defense (avoid midday exercise!), we're here if the unexpected happens.

What changed with California pet insurance in 2025?

Open

California's new SB 1217 (effective January 1, 2025) brings you greater transparency and protection. Insurers must now provide crystal-clear disclosures about coverage, exclusions, waiting periods, claims calculations, and premium factors. It also protects consumers by preventing wellness programs from being marketed as "insurance." At Embrace, our accident/illness coverage is true insurance; Wellness Rewards is your optional add-on for routine care.
