Podcast: cat and dog eye questions with Dr Patrick Mahaney

BatmanWhen I told Dr Patrick that we were covering eye care in this podcast, he was absolutely delighted! Eye care is one of his favorite topics.

Eyes are a part of the body we just expect to keep on working. A friend of mine (the human kind) had an unexpected detached retina last year and he said it really made him think how much for granted he'd taken his eyesight until then. It's the same with our cats and dogs - until something happens.

This month's podcast talks answers the following eye issue questions from our very own Embracers:

  1. What might cause eye conditions that aren’t eye conditions directly?
  2. Why are eye pressure test important as part of an annual exam?
  3. A friend of Embracer Katie (who now wishes he would have listened to Katie and got pet insurance) has a cat with an eye ulcer and it has to do with the cat’s third eyelid. They are now seeing it present in the other eye. What is the likelihood of bi-lateral corneal ulcers? Why are the third eyelids usually effected? How likely is conservative management to work, ie: drops, etc... What else might you do for this condition?
  4. From Embracer Chrissy, does Dr Patrick have a preferred remedy for tear staining?
  5. From Embracer Sara, her beagle mix Henry has 3rd eyelids that are different colors (one is black and one is pink).  Does Dr Patrick have any idea why that might be?  Could it be a sign of a problem?
  6. Along the same lines, Embracer Melissa’s Hannah (has a blue eye and a brown eye. She was told that the blue eye is basically a genetic defect and is sometimes a sign of blindness.  Is this something she should always keep an eye on (no pun intended)?  The blue eye is fine right now, but could there be problems with it in the future?
  7. Discuss the surgical complications and general problems caused by entropion, ectropion, and cherry eye.
