Top Dogs: The Most Popular Dog Names of 2018

Top Dog Names

Picking your dog’s name is a tough job sometimes! You think of one, but then you remember the annoying kid who sat behind you and put gum in your hair in grade school with the same name and you definitely don’t want that reminder every day. And if you want to be funny, you need to make sure it’s not too obscure so that everyone understands. Your new fluff will have this name for quite some time, so you want to be sure it’s a good one.

Whether you’re looking for a new pet name or trying to avoid common names, Embrace Pet Insurance dug into our 2018 quotes – more than one million of them – to see what dog names topped the charts this year. And while we were at it, we evaluated policyholder claim data to see who claimed the most with these names. Ladies first!

Top 10 Female Dog Names

  1. Bella
  2. Luna
  3. Lucy
  4. Daisy
  5. Lola
  6. Molly
  7. Sadie
  8. Chloe
  9. Coco
  10. Bailey

Does your dog share one of these names? Do you think they’re high maintenance? Embrace checked these common names in our claims data and found some pretty shocking numbers. The top claimers were Bellas by a landslide with $637,224 in claims submitted! Second place goes to Lucys with $511,823, and finally Baileys were pretty close behind with $509,819 in claims.

Lucys may have taken second place in cumulative claim amounts, but one particular Lucy led the list with the most expensive claim. In November 2018, an 8-year-old Pitbull-mix named Lucy (parented by Marianne K. of Euclid, Ohio) had a $10,264 claim for congestive heart failure. Embrace reimbursed $6,748 of that.

Top 10 Male Dog Names

  1. Max
  2. Charlie
  3. Buddy
  4. Cooper
  5. Rocky
  6. Bear
  7. Milo
