Lend a Freehand - Dog Food Review

Sara Radak

Update: Freehand has been discontinued.

This post is more than a review. It's a introduction to a mission. In a world where many companies are just in it for the cash, FreeHand has set out to make a difference.

Unless you've been living in a bubble, you know the constant struggle of animal shelters and rescue organizations to save the many stray, misplaced, and seemingly unwanted pets in our country (though I often look at my 2 rescue pups and wonder how in the world anyone could not want them!). And with the constant influx of animals, there is an ever-present need for supplies - food, bedding, toys, medications and more.

With that in mind, the creators of FreeHand went to work on creating a sustainable, high-quality dog food company with a mission to "save the lives of abandoned and abused dogs in the communities where our products are sold." To do that they donate an equal amount of their premium rescueONE food to shelters and rescues – "pound for pound, scoop for scoop, meal for meal™" The food FreeHand donates has the same quality ingredients as the packages they sell for your or my pets. What an amazing mission! Want to know how this mission works or how the 1 for 1 model they live by is sustainable?

While mission is important, we can't recommend you change your pet's dog food without first trying it out ourselves. So FreeHand sent me some samples! Since my Rott mix, Kramer, has a sensitive stomach, we currently have our dogs on a salmon-based dog food and went with the ENERGIZE: Grain-Free with Chicken & Salmon Meals from FreeHand. Grain free is all the rage in dog food right now, so I felt quite fashionable selecting that option.

The first thing I noticed was that the FreeHand food lists WAY MORE nutrition information than the food I feed my guys currently. Caloric content, percentages of protein/fat/fiber/etc., and the ingredients were all listed right on the bag. What a novel concept!

I have to admit, I wasn't surprised that my boys liked it - and not because I just knew it would be a delicious, high-quality product (Sorry FreeHand!). My dogs eat anything. They love food. Period. So for a more discerning palate, I took advantage when dog sitting my parents Chihuahua mix, Paco. Paco is a picky eater and my parents put cottage cheese on his current dog food to get him to eat it. If Paco liked it, that would convince me it was good.

I attempted to get a good picture of Paco trying the food but he was so dedicated to his meal that he wouldn't look up at me and ate too fast for a photo. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say I think he likes it! I finally snapped this handsome pic after he joined the clean bowl club. My mom would be so proud!

Conclusion: Good, high-quality food? Check! Amazing mission that helps needy dogs? Check! Sounds like FreeHand is on the right track! If you'd like to find out where you can get FreeHand food in your area, how to buy on line, or what you need to do to get your rescue involved, visit their site!
