Compare Embrace to Trupanion
Becoming a pet insurance expert means understanding the detailed differences between companies. To help you, we've prepared a list of the most important comparison points between Embrace vs Trupanion. The two companies may look similar with a quick glance, but there's a few points to consider before deciding where to place your money and your trust.
Coverage for Office Visits
Office visit and exam fees are a major part of the vet bill for accidents and illnesses. Exam fees at emergency hospitals can often cost $100 or more. Embrace reimburses you for office visits standard while Trupanion excludes office visits, leaving you with a gap in your coverage. Not having coverage for office visits is like having an extra deductible each time you go to the vet. Select a plan that covers your entire vet bill.
Alternative Therapies
Embrace plans cover alternative therapies and rehab. You don't pay any extra for this coverage because it is included in every plan. Trupanion does not cover alternative therapies, leaving you without a choice in your pet’s care and recovery. Why limit your options when it comes to doing what’s best for your pet? Our coverage includes acupuncture, chiropractics, hydrotherapy, veterinary orthopedic massage, holistic and homeopathic medicine, and more.
Wellness & Routine Care Coverage
Embrace’s Wellness Rewards is a stand-alone routine care plan to help you pay for regular visits to your vet. If your vet charges $100 for a puppy wellness visit, that’s how much Embrace will reimburse. Trupanion does not offer a Wellness Plan. Choose a company that promotes, rewards and encourages healthy pets.
Hip Dysplasia Coverage
If you’ve got a dog, especially a large breed dog, then you’ll want to read this: Embrace covers Hip Dysplasia, standard; Trupanion does not. Hip Dysplasia coverage is optional at Trupanion and will increase your premium by 24% on average. However, it’s important to note that once your dog turns 1 year old, you cannot get Hip Dysplasia coverage from Trupanion. Choose a plan that covers your pet for this painful and expensive genetic disease, often referred to as the mother of all orthopedic conditions.
Premium Increases Over Time
Don't be tricked by tactics claiming your pet's premiums won't increase with age. Trupanion has filed large double digit increases with multiple departments of insurance. While they say premiums don't go up due to age, that hasn't prevented them from doubling some policy holders' rates. Embrace does have age-related increases of about 10% starting at age 5. Typically vet clinics also increase their rates 5% for inflation each year. Combined you would see a 15% increase in this example, which is much less then some of the 100%+ increases customers have seen with Trupanion. Extra Fees
Don’t be nickel and dimed with extra fees. Embrace prides itself on having no annual fees and no monthly payment fees. Trupanion, however, has an exrta $35 fee each pet parent pays when they sign up.
Policy Term
When you sign up for a pet insurance policy with Embrace your rates and coverages are locked in for a full year from the date you purchase. Trupanion policies are monthly contracts which allow them to raise rates or make other changes at a moment's notice.
Underwriter Rating
Embrace is underwritten by RLI Insurance, a specialty insurer that operates nationwide. A. M. Best Company rates RLI A+ (Superior), a distinction held by fewer than 10% of all property and casualty insurance companies in the country. Trupanion underwrites its own policies and does not have a rating. Would you put your trust with an insurance company that isn’t A-rated?
