Pudge’s mom, Lacey, got him from a local breeder in June 2008. Just a week after he was neutered, he began to suffer from hind end paralysis due to spinal cord compression. Lacey tried everything from acupuncture to chiropractic therapy to complete confinement and prednisone, but nothing helped.
In August 2009, Pudge underwent spinal decompression surgery (a thoracic hemilaminectomy) at Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital costing $7,411. He could not be moved for 4 weeks, but in his 5th week, he has shown signs of improvement. Since his water therapy, Pudge can stand on his own and take a couple steps before he falls. He has even regained control of his bladder and bowels.
Pudge has catastrophic pet insurance; his mom pays a high deductible ($500) for up to $10,000 coverage per year. This equates to a lower monthly premium for Lacey, and more coverage against major, catastrophic events. Embrace also reimbursed a flat 80% of Pudge's covered treatment.

Lacey shared with us:
The water therapy is really great for Pudge. He is building back his muscle. My prayer is that one day he will walk again on his own...unassisted! Each day he shows a little progress. He is a fighter. He is so happy. He doesn't even know he is handicapped. Animals are so amazing!
